Every child learns differently. Safe Tutor is built for that.
This is the most important thing we do. Every student profile has a school year level and a separate working level. The working level sets how hard the explanations are. The year level sets how your child is spoken to.
So a twelve-year-old working at a Year 3 reading level gets explanations pitched at Year 3 — but is never spoken to like a small child, never given babyish examples, and is never told their level is different. Dignity and difficulty are separate settings, and they always will be.
Safe Tutor is text-first by design. Every lesson works completely without sound, and nothing important is ever conveyed by audio alone. For students who read English as a second language after Auslan, the plain language setting shortens sentences, removes idioms and explains new words as they appear.
When video lessons arrive, captions will ship with them from day one — not added later. We are also seeking advice on Auslan support and will not claim it until it is real.
The micro steps setting gives one small idea at a time — two or three sentences, then a check-in — instead of a wall of text. Low-distraction classroomhides everything except the lesson, stills all movement and animation, and shows one thing at a time. Merit stars give immediate feedback for effort, and short sessions are encouraged rather than long ones.
Alongside the working level, you can turn on plain language, extra repetition and recap, picture-led explanations and a gentle pace. The tutor revisits key ideas in different words, checks understanding more often, and finishes with a simple recap — while still treating your child as the age they are.
Larger text, easier-to-read letters with wider letter and line spacing, and read aloud — which speaks the teacher's answer using your device's own voice — are all one tap away inside the classroom, and are remembered next time.
Little Learners mode is built for ages 2 to 5: no reading, no typing, no writing. Children tap big pictures, and their teacher answers in one or two short sentences read aloud, always ending with something to go and find, touch or count in the real world.
We are honest about screen time. Australian guidelines recommend no screen time for children under 2, and up to an hour a day of quality screen use for ages 2 to 5. Little Learners is designed for short bursts, sitting beside a grown-up — never as a babysitter, and never as a substitute for play, talking and books.
The stretch pace setting extends a student who finds the standard pitch too easy, offering harder follow-on challenges and deeper "what if" questions. You can also set a working level above your child's school year in any subject.
We would rather tell you the truth than overpromise. Still to come: full screen-reader testing against WCAG 2.2 AA, keyboard-only navigation review, captions and Auslan for video lessons, and a switch-access review. We are also seeking feedback from families and educators with lived experience — if that's you, we would genuinely love to hear from you.
Safe Tutor is a learning support tool. It is not a therapy, not an intervention programme, not a diagnostic tool, and not a replacement for teachers, specialists or allied health professionals. Please treat it as one helpful part of your child's support, alongside the people who know them.
