Privacy Policy

How we look after your family's information

Draft for review. This policy has been prepared as a working draft. Because Safe Tutor is a service used by children, please have it reviewed by an Australian privacy lawyer before you begin taking payments. Replace every [SQUARE BRACKET] with your real details.

Safe Tutor is operated by [YOUR BUSINESS NAME] [ABN: ______], based in Western Australia. We handle personal information in accordance with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and the Australian Privacy Principles.

The short version: a parent or guardian creates the account. We collect the parent's email address and a nickname plus year level for each child. We do not collect children's real names, addresses, photos, phone numbers or contact details, and we never sell anyone's data or show advertising.

1. Information we collect

From the parent or guardian:

  • Email address and an encrypted password, used to create and secure your account.
  • Billing information if you subscribe. Card details are handled entirely by Stripe — we never see or store your card number.

About each student profile:

  • A first name or nickname chosen by the parent, and a year level.
  • The teacher character the child selects.
  • Learning activity: questions asked of the tutor, subjects studied, merit stars earned, and items saved to the Mistakes Vault.

We do not ask children for, and ask that they never enter, personal details such as their surname, school, address, phone number, email or photographs. Our tutor is instructed to refuse and redirect if a child begins to share such information.

2. Why we collect it

  • To provide the tutoring service and tailor it to the child's year level.
  • To save progress so a child can pick up where they left off.
  • To show parents how their child is progressing.
  • To manage subscriptions, apply plan limits, and provide support.
  • To keep the service safe and detect misuse.

3. Parental consent and control

Accounts may only be created by a parent or guardian aged 18 or over. Children do not create their own accounts and do not have their own logins. As the account holder you can at any time view your child's activity, edit or delete a student profile, or delete the entire account — which permanently removes all associated learning data.

4. Artificial intelligence

Tutor responses are generated using AI technology provided by Anthropic. The questions a student asks are sent to that service to produce a reply. We instruct the model to remain on school-appropriate topics and to decline anything unsafe or off-topic. AI can occasionally be wrong, so answers should be treated as tutoring support rather than a guaranteed correct result, and children should be supervised as you see fit.

5. Who we share information with

We do not sell personal information. We share it only with the service providers that make Safe Tutor work: Supabase (secure account and database hosting), Stripe (payments), Anthropic (AI tutor responses), and Netlify (website hosting). Some of these providers store or process data overseas, including in the United States. We may also disclose information if required by law.

6. Security and retention

Data is stored in secured, access-controlled databases, and our security rules mean one family's information can never be accessed by another. We keep information for as long as your account is active. If you delete your account, we remove your learning data; limited billing records may be retained where tax or legal obligations require it.

7. Cookies

We use only the cookies necessary to keep you signed in and to operate the site. We do not use advertising or third-party tracking cookies.

8. Accessing, correcting or deleting your information

You can view and update most information from your account page. To request access to, correction of, or deletion of your information, email us at safe-tutor@proton.me and we will respond within a reasonable time.

9. Complaints

If you believe we have mishandled your information, please contact us first at safe-tutor@proton.me. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner at oaic.gov.au.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. If we make a significant change, we will notify account holders by email.
